One of those battles that most people fight in silence is depression. It is not merely sadness or moodiness over a couple of days, it is a strong sense of emptiness, hopelessness and weariness that cannot be replaced. Being a Nigerian, I understand that our society usually tells us to simply be strong or be able to shake it off, however, depression is more about that. It influences the mind, the body and even the perception of life. This is why it is so important to learn how to cope with depression.

Acceptance that depression is real is the first step in dealing with depression. A good part of humanity ignores their emotions and pretends that everything is okay. Ignoring depression does not help it to vanish, it just increases the weight. There is no shame in acknowledging that you are not okay, it is the first step to recovery.

Talking to someone you can count on is another important step. Depression develops in seclusion. Talking to a close friend, a family member or even a counselor can help you feel better. It would help you feel less lonely sometimes just to have someone listen to you without passing judgment. When professional help is needed, it is better to use the services of a therapist or a doctor. Mental care should not be regarded as shame, it is a sign of strength to ask.

Being a great way to get with depression is also taking care of your body. Eating healthily, exercising and sleeping properly are simple things that can make a big difference. Even a little stroll will do you good. Depression usually makes you feel like not doing anything, so forcing yourself bit by bit to keep going may break the heavy cycle.

The other one is to manage what you think. Depression likes to thrive on thinking badly, such as feeling useless, worthless, or despondent. you can slowly change the way you think by learning to substitute those thoughts with positive ones even little ones. The example is to use a simple statement instead of saying, I am useless, say, I am having a bad time, but I am worth it.

Spiritual power is also dominant. A lot of Nigerians feel at ease upon praying, worshiping, and reading the Word of God. Faith can remind us that we are not orphans and that there is hope after the suffering we are going through. There are those times when an individual feels depressed and the future may seem dim, yet faith may illuminate even the blackest of ways.

Lastly, wait with yourself. Depression is a long process to heal. There will be better days than bad days, and that is all right. Reward small accomplishments, such as getting out of bed, completing an assignment, smiling once more. Take your time and do not compare yourself to others.

Finally, depression does not have to be the conclusion of your story. It has seen a number of people go through it and emerge stronger. The trick is to learn to live with it, discuss it, take care of your body, protect your thoughts, rely on faith, and give yourself time. Always keep in mind that as hard as life is at the moment, tomorrow could still be better. There is nothing wrong with you and you need not lose hope in your life.
