Pochentong Airport to Become Public Park by 2026
Prime Minister Hun Manet has confirmed that the former Phnom Penh International Airport, known as Pochentong Airport, will not be sold to private entities. Speaking at the inauguration of Techo International Airport on October 20, he emphasized that the site remains state property, with $3 million allocated for its maintenance and security under the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
The government plans to transform the 200-hectare site into a public park for Phnom Penh residents, while preserving its function as an emergency landing zone. Parts of the airport, built in the 1950s, will be converted into a museum and other public-use facilities, honoring its historical significance.
Despite offers from private companies and the land’s multibillion-dollar value, Manet rejected all proposals, prioritizing public benefit over profit. Tree planting is already underway, and the site is expected to open to the public in early 2026.
