Thailand’s replica is seen as commercial exploitation of Khmer heritage

Cambodia’s Minister of Culture, Phoeung Sackona, has strongly criticized Thailand’s construction of "Siha Nakhon" temple in Buriram, which replicates Angkor Wat’s design, calling it a "blatant infringement" on Khmer cultural identity. Speaking at the **ICC-Angkor meeting** in Siem Reap, she accused Thailand of violating its obligations under the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention.  

Angkor Wat, a UNESCO-listed symbol of Cambodia’s heritage, holds deep religious and historical significance. The unauthorized replica, built within Phu Man Fah Temple, has sparked outrage, with Cambodia demanding action to preserve the sanctity of its cultural legacy. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over heritage appropriation in the region.
