Thai Troops Stir Fear in Chouk Chey

In O Bei Chon commune, Banteay Meanchey, daily life for Cambodians near the Thai border has remained largely unchanged despite the closure of border crossings. Farming, small businesses, and local work continue as usual, with residents adapting to the restrictions without major disruption. However, in Chouk Chey village, home to over 700 families, a deeper concern has emerged—not over trade or travel, but the unsettling expansion of razor wire barricades and Thai military presence encroaching into Cambodian territory.

Village chief Pen Rithy voiced the growing anxiety among locals, who now live in constant fear of land seizures. The community reports sleepless nights and heightened vigilance, as soldiers from across the border continue to push fencing further into Cambodian land. This tense atmosphere has kept villagers close to home, unwilling to leave their families for work, as they remain on alert for any sign of further encroachment.
