Trump announces India-US trade deal; tariffs reduced from 25% to 18%

US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a new trade deal with India following a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under the agreement, the United States will reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, easing trade tensions between the two countries.

In return, Trump said India will stop buying Russian oil and commit to purchasing about $500 billion worth of US energy, technology, agricultural and other products. He added that India has also agreed to move toward cutting its tariffs and non-tariff barriers on US goods to zero.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the announcement, thanking Trump for lowering tariffs on Indian products. He said closer cooperation between the two countries would benefit their citizens and open new opportunities for partnership between the world’s two largest democracies.

The deal comes after a period of strained ties, following the US decision last year to impose steep tariffs on India over trade disputes and its purchase of Russian oil. The announcement also coincided with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to the US for talks on critical minerals supply chains.
