Cambodia, Thailand Sign Peace Deal in Kuala Lumpur
On October 26, Cambodia and Thailand formally signed the "Kuala Lumpur Accords" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, resolving recent border hostilities. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed the peace agreement on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, with U.S. President Donald Trump and ASEAN Chairman Anwar Ibrahim witnessing the event. This accord marks a significant step following deadly border clashes that occurred between July 24 and 28, which stemmed from unresolved colonial-era territorial disputes.
The agreement solidifies the ceasefire that took effect on July 28 following direct intervention by President Trump and ASEAN mediation. Key provisions of the accords include Thailand beginning the repatriation of 18 Cambodian soldiers captured on July 29, and both nations agreeing to withdraw heavy weaponry from the conflict zone. This aims to immediately de-escalate tensions and stabilize the disputed area.
Both nations' leaders expressed firm commitment to fully implementing the agreement and restoring bilateral relations. Prime Minister Manet emphasized Cambodia's dedication to lasting peace, while Prime Minister Anutin detailed immediate steps for de-escalation. Chairman Anwar lauded President Trump's role in facilitating the deal, highlighting its crucial potential to prevent future violence and ensure regional stability.
